Just wondering if any people have been giving 9th Age a try, and if so what your thoughts are?

There's a few of us who've been playing. A split of people who don't go to tournaments and those who do.

I really like it. It's a similar switch between 8th ed and 9th ed as say, 6th to 7th etc. Building armies is probably where the most change is that I've noticed. Special rules have also changed, but in the most case it's similar to what was there before.

Elves lost ASF but gained +1 to hit, which I think works better. They kinda got quite boring when they were ASF.

I've played a game of 9th against Mike and it was quite enjoyable. I took a few different units as some of the new special rules changed what they did. Spearmen are especially cool for a cheap unit (Mike charged them with his heavy cavalry to see what would happen and the spearmen prevailed, as they should)

Orcs no longer get animosity so basic orcs seemed more viable.
Im not experienced enough with it to know if you could still exploit lists the way you used to be able to but it looks promising.

I like the feeling of the warhammer universe, perhaps due to gaming in it and themeing my armies towards it over the past 15 years, so I am predisposed towards 9th age. I can see the appeal of KoW, being relatively simple and easy to learn. However I'm a bit of a fluff gamer, so I prefer the way that you can customise things ad infinatum in warhammer style games. There is a depth to it that lets your army feel like its unique and 'yours'. Ironic really, if you consider that 9th age was created by the tournament community...

Not the same thing.

Fluff has generally referred to story, background, theme and so on, which is independent of rule system and comes through in the unique look of a person's army.

Customising things ad infinitum is just rules tinkering.

I have been playing up in Palmy and love the changes. Much more balanced so you can bring those units which you love but just did not see play because they sucked. It has been really good using my trees and blade dancers for my woodies and ironbreakers and miners for the dwarfs.

I think once people give it a go they will have a lot of fun.

It's awesome being able to take High Elves with heavy armour. Making them more armoured changes the way you play them. It's a lot easier to just through them in front of something now.
