The new edition is being released later this month.

Some of what's being said here is likely, though take it with a grain of salt until you get ahold of the new book yourself:

6th Ed is 2 years old, so we're all surprised about the new Edition. 6th has gone off the rails w/ all the new add ins, so starting an edition designed (in theory) to incorporate all that might help a bit. We'll see in a couple of weeks.

Whats peoples thoughts around a new starter set? Yes? no? The much rumoured Blood agels v Orks from a few moths ago? Dark vengeance repress with new book?

thoughts are that it's the rumoured blood angles/orks split, esp since orks is the next rumoured book. ultrapapasmurf follows the rumour mill pretty carefully, and makes frequent mention of the fact that anything more than a month away is almost pure speculation. reliable rumours are only turning up a month out at most, so while i'm hopeful for new ork toys w/ the next boxed set, i'll believe it when i see it.

40k radio has said that Dark Vengeance will still be the starter set but with a new mini book.

There is no new starter set. Dark Vengeance is being repacked with new rulebooks
Thats confirmed now

Feeling a bit burned by the imminent cost of an update- $165 according to the White Dwarf. White Dwarf itself is in such a poor state. The "battle report" and articles give very little away but here is what I know from it:

There will be 2 new psychic disciplines, Santic and Daemonology. The latter allows you to summon and conjure daemons. The picture of the article showed Coteaz leading a squad of Bloodletters. Wasn't the Grey Knights codex all about being anti-daemon killers of all things hellish?
Tactical objectives can be used to earn points throughout the game.
Unbound armies allow you to make Tyranids playable.
Difficult terrain is -2 to charge distance.
You will nee a 7 to cause a vehicle to explode.
There will be a psychic phase between the movement and shooting phase.

FMCs take a single grounding test for being wounded at the end of a phase, rather than being hit.

Is it too early to speculate how tournaments will be treating unbound lists?

|twynsic|e, as a guy who runs a couple of chch events a year, i'm thinking it's too early to tell. I'm keen to allow as many of the rules as possible, in the name of fun, but don't want it to become like the auckland/us scene where people are buying the latest and greatest combo just to keep up with the proverbial Jones'.

So by early June, i should have a hold of the rule book, and i'll start looking at how CavCon (a typically fluffy event) will shape up. i'll take what i learn there and use it to make decisions about Conquest, a typically more "tournament"-type event.

and Nick, don't despair. New editions always look messed up. it took me a few months of 6th before i figured out that i didn't need to change my DE playstyle, despite what the internet had told me. just go into it with an open mind and see how it works out. there'll still be plenty of fun to be had.

Me too! Don't want to winge but $165!? If you look at dark vengence on the GW site it says 'Please note: To get the latest set of Warhammer 40,000 game rules you will need to purchase the new edition of Warhammer 40,000'.

Nice GW, thanks. 'Please buy our starter set for $200 then if you want to play it properly you will need to pay another $160'

I spent less than that on the rulebook, army book and a whole army for bolt action. Just can justify spending that sort of money just for rules. Hopefully mini-rulebooks become avaliable before conquest. I've been working on my exodites for too damn long to give up now.
