So I am looking at picking up a new game and as I have a bit of history with 40k it has drawn my attention. My last games were played in 3rd edition with little grasp on the rules, no idea on tactics and no experience other than some guys in a similar situation as myself. My main motivation to start this will purely be hobby based, picking up units that stand out and make me want to put them together and paint them. If it grows into something more than that then sweet, if not then at least GW will have a hard time pulling an Age of Sigmar on me in this game too :|

What I am after here is posts talking me into, or out of, diving back into the 40k universe.

•What are some of the ups and downs of the game in the current edition?
•Does taking any unit you want show up much in tournaments?
•If it does, does it ruin the fun for the person playing against it?
•How does the current 40k tournament scene look? Does it have a future or is it fading away?
•Anything you wish someone had told you before you started playing.

I'd even be happy if someone pointed me in the direction of a thread that already exists on the same topic or somewhere I can post and receive something more than erh ma gersh, 40k sucks!!!1!1one

I think your best bet would be here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CHCH40K/

despite best efforts, the forum never really took off as a place to talk "local" 40k. This facebook group has really filled in that roll nicely and has about ~140 members, including all the locals that run events for the Cavaliers (the group that meets at the Shirley St Albans club on Thursdays) In fact, if the facebook group isn't something for you, coming along to a "meeting" (a bunch of folks playing games) is a good way to meet and greet and see what a large part of the Christchurch social 4k scene is like.

I'm Wes, and i'll be playing Dark Eldar there this thursday from around 6:30

Cheers for the reply, while I have taken a while to respond I appreciate the invite. Unfortunately I am not from Christchurch but if I find myself down there I will make sure I come along :)

Regardless of whether you're from chch or not, i'd still recommend the christchurch40k facebook page. we've got people from all over NZ on it and any questions, ideas, inspiration you need can be found there.
