I was wondering if anyone here has played the classic board game Arkham horror before? I've been hearing good things about it in passing for a long time now, and I've been thinking of picking up a copy.

It's fantastic :D

It also has a million supplements and add ons - it does get (IMO) needlessly complicated if you play with too many of them, but it is a VERY good game

How complicated is it as a base game (no expansions)? Does it require the level of rulebook dredging that most wargames do, or is it pretty casual like most adult boardgames? The only thing putting me off at the moment is the daunting array of parts that come with the game. Well that and I can't decide if Mansions of Madness would suit me better... Other than that, I'm sold! :D

Fairly complicated. It's not one of those "she'll be right" type beer-and pretzels games where you can muddle your way through it.
You need to have a fairly good handle on the rules to get the most out of the game.

I'm pretty sure I typed up a rules summary for when Tim, Mark and I were playing it (as we kept getting stuff wrong, mostly the order in which things were supposed to happen). I'll see if I can find it.

Cheers mate, that'd be very handy. What did you and your group think of the game?

It's more complicated than most board games, but it's WAY less complicated than most wargames. There are twenty thousand pieces but most of them go in specific places and the most time consuming part is the setup, IMO.

The base game plays just fine by itself; the expansions all (in one way or another) make the game harder to win, and it's already pretty tough :)

Yeah I quite liked it, having all the players working together co-operatively makes a nice change. A lot of setup involved though.

As most others have said, its pretty good, and playing as a co-op rather than head to head was refreshing :)
