The simplest tip I can give that I wish I had learned many many many years ago is:

Build a wet palette!! It really helps with thinning paints and taking the stress out of paint drying.

It might sound complicated but it is not, grab a plate (or a plastic square lid), put some paper towel on the plate and wet the paper towel, leaving a bit of water in the bottom of the plate (but not too much). Then place a piece of baking paper covering the paper towel - trying to make sure its flat. BAM, put paint on baking paper/palette and profit.

I found the Windsor&Newton series 7 brushes to be fantastic and have really helped me improve the quality of my painting, but the pricetag (got mine for ~$30 each) is a bit hefty so keeping them well looked after is a must (chroma brush cleaner is pretty good i find.)
