What is the best firearm in 40k, as carried by the bulk of basic troops choices in a chosen codex?
Surely you can't go past the humble las-gun.

Las-guns all the way.
Reasonable fire power, not bad range, easy to mass produce and maintain, you tend to get a hell of a lot of them (or is that the guardsmen you get lots of) and you can teach any old half witted Conscript to use it.

Are we talking about for clubbing people with or shooting them with? If the former then Lasgun wins hands down.

Clubbing, Shooting, Digging with, Toilet roll holder...anything...
The mighty Las-gun will perform well in all circumstances and is therefore the best weapon of its type.
Especially good at Salamander culling...sometimes...

I disagree, the lasgun is a horrible piece of so called 'weaponry'.
